Eblana expands ultra-narrow linewidth laser diode range with EP1550-NLW-B series
Announced Date: 1/26/2009 Published Date: 1/26/2009

Eblana Photonics of Dublin, Ireland, an approximately $8 million-funded, seven-year old spin out from Trinity College Dublin and the Irish National Microelectronics Research Centre, which:

  1. Offers proprietary photon-bandgap laser technology suitable for long wavelength 1310, 1490 and 1550 nm laser diode products targeting high-volume broadband access, enterprise, metro and SAN applications, including FTTP APON / EPON, SONET/SDH and CWDM, which are designed to:

    1. Operate uncooled in simplified production packages.

    2. Simplify transceiver manufacture through the above and by delivering consistent performance and quality.

    3. Exhibit characteristics including reduced sensitivity to optical feedback, circular, non-astigmatic laser emission for more efficient fibre and PLC coupling, and "excellent" thermal performance.

  2. In March 2007 announced first shipments of the EP1310-DM-XXXX-Q product series, an isolator-free extended temperature range (-40 to 85 C) single wavelength laser diode for GPON and other transceiver applications.

  3. Also in March 2007 announced that it had extended its laser product offerings to incorporate lasers for use in IEEE 802.3ae 10 Gigabit Ethernet, 10GBASE-LR/LRM/LW and 10 Gbit Fibre Channel applications.

  4. In September 2007 announced initial shipments of single wavelength laser diodes for analogue and other applications demanding ultra-narrow linewidth and low phase noise operation.

  5. In July 2008 announced development of the EP1550-NLW-B narrow linewidth semiconductor laser product series, delivering guaranteed emission linewidth specified at 400 KHz and below, noting that it had begun commercial shipments and that the products were being used in high bandwidth coherent communications applications.

Now announced that it has expanded its ultra-narrow linewidth laser diode range with the introduction of the EP1550-NLW-B series, offering emission linewidths of below 200 KHz, for use in communications, sensor and medical applications.

As with the existing 400 KHz devices, the new series products:

  1. Deliver highly linear light current characteristics and high side mode suppression ratio (SMSR).

  2. Are supplied in an industry-standard, hermetically sealed 14-pin butterfly package integrated with optical isolator, thermo-electric cooler (TEC), thermistor and power monitor photodiode.

  3. Ship with individual test data showing the measured linewidth for each device.

Richard Phelan, Eblana Director of New Product Development, stated:

  • "Our EP1550-NLW-B product series delivers an unprecedented price-performance quotient by leveraging Eblana's high-volume laser fabrication platform to produce a semiconductor diode laser with an unrivalled level of spectral purity".

  • "One of the key benefits provided by this laser is its narrow-line emission performance even at low emitted powers, in contrast to the typical characteristics of a DFB laser where extreme operating points are required to reach even MHz line-widths".
