Telefonica Spain teams with Huawei to develop 100 Gbit/s metro network as part of transformation program

Huawei and Telefonica have announced the joint deployment of a 100 Gbit/s intelligent metro network in Spain designed to help Telefonica modernise its metro networks to enable enhanced, higher-quality broadband services and a better user experience.

Telefonica stated that it is committed to providing high quality network connectivity to enable a consistent end-to-end (E2E) user experience. To help support the development of new demanding high bandwidth services and the transformation of its data centres, Telefonica has formulated a long-term strategy based on modernising its metro networks to deliver the key underlying transport layer for its network.

As part of this project, Huawei is providing its advanced metro optical transport network (OTN) solution that features capabilities such as auto-restoration based on a GMPLS control plane and is designed to enable a smooth transition to transport SDN (T-SDN). Utilising unified network management and E2E OTN grooming, Huawei's metro OTN solution is claimed to be up to twice as efficient as traditional solutions in terms of service provisioning and management to help Telefonica meet its strategic objectives.

The Huawei solution also offers support for 100/200 Gbit/s bandwidth, with the ability to move to 400 Gbit/s bandwidth to help address the bandwidth requirements of applications such as 4K video and data centre interconnect (DCI) services over the next 10 years. Following completion of the network upgrade, Telefonica's metro OTN network will feature a simplified and meshed architecture enabling one-hop transmission, thereby enabling low latency and provides the foundation for delivery of 4K video services.

Earlier this year, Telefonica and Huawei announced the successful migration of commercial user traffic over an SDN IP+Optical trial network in Peru, which the parties claimed marked the first time live traffic has been carried over such a network.

The network solution was based on Huawei's SDN architecture and designed to help Telefonica improve operation efficiency and reduce opex. During the trial Telefonica additionally verified the commercial ability of Huawei's SDN solution to operate in a WAN/backbone domain.
